There are several software tools for repairing and recovering your Outlook Express mail.

The best tool that we've found is Advanced Outlook Express Repair, a software for Windows that allows you to recover your Outlook Express emails from corrupt dbx files and mbx files.

How to repair

Outlook Express stores all messages of a mail folder in a corresponding .dbx file. For example, the Inbox.dbx file contains messages that are displayed in the Inbox mail folder in Outlook Express, the Outbox.dbx file contains messages that are displayed in the Outbox mail folder, and so on.

Step 1: Find the corrupt dbx file if you haven't done so. For this, you need to go to Tools| Options| Maintenance| Store Folder in Outlook Express, and you will find out the folder where Outlook Express stores all the .dbx files

Step 2: Start Advanced Outlook Express Repair.

Note: Before repairing the corrupt dbx files, please close Outlook Express, and double check using the Task Manager that the msimn.exe process is not running ( this is the Outlook Express process, and might still be running after you close the main window of Outlook Express ).

Step 3: Select the corrupt dbx file to be repaired:

You can input the dbx filename directly or click button to browse and select the file.

Step 4: By default, Advanced Outlook Express Repair will output all the recovered messages in directory xxxx_recovered, where xxxx is the name of the corrupt dbx file. For example, for the file Inbox.dbx, the default output directory will be Inbox_recovered. If you want to use another directory, then please select it accordingly:

You can input the directory name directly or click button to browse and select the directory.

Step 5: Click button, Advanced Outlook Express Repair will start recovering mails from the corrupt dbx file. Progressbar will indicate the repair progress.

After the repair process, if messages have been recovered from the dbx file successfully, you will see a messagebox like this:

Note: The demo version will only recover 10 messages in the dbx file, with remaining messages filled with a demo information. Please order the full version to get the contents of these messages.

Step 6: Now you can open a recovered message with Outlook Express by double-clicking the icon in the output directory.
